Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna of Patagonia are striking for their richness and vibrant colours. Constant rainfall gives rise to the southern temperate rainforest, featuring trees such as alerce (Patagonian cypress), Guaitecas cypress, lenga beech, canelo tree, and hardy fuchsia, along with giant ferns, Chilean rhubarb (nalca), and plants traditionally used by Indigenous peoples for shelter and cooking.

Wildlife includes sea lions, dolphins, whales, leopard seals, cormorants, black-necked swans, and kingfishers, among others.

In the Gulf of Corcovado, blue whales—locally known as Alfaguaras—have also been observed.

It is important to note that Patagonian wildlife lives in a wild state, and therefore sightings of all species cannot always be guaranteed.
