Islote Barrientos (Barrientos Islet) is a small rocky outcrop reached after navigating through the Pilcomayo Channel and the Casma Passage. This site concentrates the largest number of seabirds in the region, ranging from kelp gulls to rock, red-legged, and imperial cormorants. There is also a large population of South American sea lions, known as lobos marinos de dos pelos due to their seasonal change of coat, shifting from dark to lighter tones throughout the year.
The main reason these species gather here is the abundance of food available in the surrounding waters, making it an ideal location for settlement and reproduction. In addition, the area provides protection from natural predators found in the region.
A boat excursion will take place, approaching quietly to observe nests, chicks, and an impressive variety of adult birds.
