Located in the Fjord of the Mountains, Bernal Glacier is in its terminal phase. Its tongue of ice no longer reaches the sea, instead resting on rock and a lagoon formed by its own meltwater. This site perfectly illustrates the advance and retreat of a glacier.
We disembark using our excursion boats and follow a trail that winds through a young forest of coigüe and lenga beech until reaching the foot of the glacier. The area gradually becomes an open-air classroom, where we learn how nature—through mosses and lichens—is slowly reclaiming the terrain as the glacier continues to recede.
The Bernal Glacier is a giant in decline, set within a landscape that seems drawn from a fairy tale.
