Quemchi

Quemchi—whose name in the Huilliche language means “rusted land”—is a town and municipality in Chile’s Los Lagos Region, located on the northeastern coast of Isla Grande de Chiloé. This picturesque town of approximately 9,000 inhabitants has preserved Chilote culture intact; its colourful streets and traditional houses clad in larch shingles reflect a past that remains very much alive.

Here, visitors can explore the historic museum dedicated to writer Francisco Coloane—born in Quemchi and recipient of the 1964 National Literature Prize—which recreates his life and work, shaped by narratives depicting the harshness of southern Chile, such as El último grumete de la Baquedano y Cabo de Hornos.

Among its other attractions are its cafés, restaurants, and local shops, as well as a beautiful waterfront promenade and a large handicrafts market next to the pier, where wool, wood, and plant-fibre crafts are offered.

A special highlight is its small yet picturesque wooden church, distinguished by its vibrant colours.
